Named by The Forward as one of the 50 most influential Jews of the year, Abby Stein is the first openly transgender woman raised in a Hasidic home. The author, activist, model, speaker and former rabbi will share her story with Rabbi Avram Mlotek in a conversation about her coming-of-age memoir Becoming Eve: My Journey from Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman.
Abby attended Yeshiva, completing a rabbinical degree in 2011. The following year, she left the Hasidic world to explore a self-determined life. In 2015 Abby came out as a woman of trans experience. Her story has been covered in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, Vogue and more, as well as in live appearances on outlets including CNN, Fox News, HuffPost Live, ShowTime and internationally.
Rethinking traditions is something that Rabbi Mlotek knows a bit about, himself. His new book Why Jews Do That: Or 30 Questions Your Rabbi Never Answered asks: "What's with Jews and candles? Why are Jews obsessed with food? Is sex kosher?" and unpacks Jewish rituals and beliefs with refreshing chutzpah.
