With his call for ''a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the US," Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump has touched off a firestorm of denunciations from across the political and religious field.

In a rare chorus of harmony, Republicans, Democrats, Muslim leaders, the UN and foreign leaders have condemned the whoop as dangerous and fascistic. Jewish groups have been especially outspoken in their dismay.

“A plan that singles out Muslims and denies them entry to the U.S. based on their religion is deeply offensive and runs contrary to our nation’s deepest values,” the Anti-Defamation League admonished in a statement on the evening of December 7, soon after Trump sounded his bigoted rallying cry.

“In the Jewish community, we know all too well what can happen when a particular religious group is singled out for stereotyping and scapegoating,” Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL’s CEO said. “We also know that this country must not give into fear by turning its back on its fundamental values, even at a time of great crisis.”
